Son La Hydropower Plant is the largest one in Southeast Asia. The plant was commenced in 02/12/2006 and its unit No.I was proposed to be put in operation in 12/2010.
Son La hydropower Plant with proposed installed capacity of 2,400 MW will be connected to the national power network by four 500 kV-power line namely Son La - Hoa Binh, Son La - Nho Quan, Son La - Viet Tri and Son La - Soc Son. Son La 500 kV transformer station is proposed to be placed at Pi Toong area, 3 to 4 km away from the plant.

- Reservoir area: 224 km2. Total storage capacity: 9.26 billion m3.
- Installed capacity: 2.400 MW, 6 units.
- Annual average power output:: 9.429 billion kWh.
- Project grade: special.
- Total investment cost: VND 42,476.9 billion (of which initial investment cost: VND 36,786.97 billion and interest in the construction time: VND 5,708 billion).
